THE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR OF WEST VIRGINIA said Monday that Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, the West Virginia National Guard member wounded in the November 26 shooting in Washington, D.C., has shown “positive signs” during treatment. According to Governor Patrick Morrisey, Wolfe responded to a nurse and demonstrated movement in his lower extremities. No additional medical details have been released by the treating facility, and Wolfe remains hospitalized in serious condition.
THE WEST VIRGINIA NATIONAL GUARD previously confirmed the identities of the two service members involved in the incident, stating that Staff Sergeant Wolfe was wounded and Specialist Sarah Beckstrom was killed. Guard officials said they remain in contact with both families and are coordinating support while awaiting further updates from federal investigators.
Law-enforcement authorities have identified the suspected shooter as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national. Officials stated that Lakanwal was taken into custody immediately following the incident and remains under guard while receiving medical care. Formal federal charges are pending public release.
