WASHINGTON, D.C. — December 4, 2025.
The United States and Sweden reinforced their growing defense partnership today as U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth hosted Swedish Minister of Defence Pål Jonson at the Pentagon, according to an official release from the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF WAR. The meeting marked another significant step in Sweden’s integration into NATO following its accession in March 2024 and highlighted a shared commitment to expanding military cooperation, production capacity, and alliance readiness.
According to the U.S. DEPARTMENT OF WAR, Secretary Hegseth called the U.S.–Sweden relationship “incredibly important,” praising Stockholm’s accelerated alignment with NATO standards and its expanding leadership role in European security. Jonson publicly acknowledged U.S. support and underscored Sweden’s intention to contribute meaningfully to collective defense, emphasizing that Sweden aims not only to benefit from alliance security but to “help produce security” through capability, production, and readiness.
Both sides discussed increased cooperation in defense-industrial development, including joint efforts to expand production lines and meet the alliance goal of raising defense spending toward 5% of national GDP by 2035. The U.S. DEPARTMENT OF WAR notes that Sweden has already begun moving aggressively toward that benchmark. The meeting also affirmed ongoing collaboration in advanced technology, equipment sustainment, and operational readiness initiatives across NATO territory.
The engagement comes at a time of heightened global security challenges, making Sweden a strategically valuable Nordic partner within the alliance. For the United States, today’s meeting strengthens a reliable new NATO ally; for Sweden, it demonstrates its commitment to integrating deeply into Western defense structures and supporting U.S.-led security frameworks.
