Buckhannon, WV; December 15th, 2025

Upshur County begins the day under firm winter conditions following a night of strong radiational cooling, reinforced by snow cover and cold-soaked ground. Early morning conditions favor very slow warming, with surface temperatures lagging well behind any modest air-temperature recovery.

Temperatures

Morning lows across Upshur County are likely in the single digits to low teens, with colder pockets possible in sheltered areas and higher elevations. Through the afternoon, temperatures are expected to recover only into the upper teens to mid 20s, with some locations struggling to rise much above the lower 20s where snow cover persists.

Wind and Wind Chill

Winds are expected to remain light to occasionally moderate, but sufficient to produce noticeably colder wind chill values during the morning hours. Early wind chills in the single digits or below are probable, with gradual improvement later in the day. We’re about 87%-90% confident in this part of our report on account of terrain channeling and overnight decoupling effects. I firmly believe that the overall pattern holds solid, but localized ridge and hollow variations can shift wind and gust timing.

Precipitation

No new precipitation is expected today; existing snowpack will continue to influence local conditions, limiting daytime warming and contributing to colder surface temperatures.

Road Conditions

Road conditions across Upshur County are likely to remain variable, especially during the morning hours. Snow-covered and icy patches are probable on secondary roads, shaded stretches, bridges, and higher-elevation routes. Even where pavement appears clear, refreeze and black ice remain possible due to very cold ground temperatures. Some improvement may occur on treated main roads during the afternoon, though conditions are expected to deteriorate again after sunset.

Overall Outlook

Today favors persistent winter conditions, with cold temperatures, limited daytime recovery, and continued travel caution recommended, particularly during the morning commute and evening hours.

Overall Forecast confidence: 94%

Weather forecasting is based on the best available data, pattern recognition, and historical behavior of the atmosphere, but is hardly ever absolute; small changes in wind direction, cloud cover, or timing can shift local conditions, especially in complex terrain. Forecasts describe what is most likely to happen, not what is guaranteed to happen, and conditions can always evolve faster or slower than expected.
