Washington, D.C.; December 26th, 2025
A federal court has ruled in favor of the United States Department of Justice, preventing the State of Michigan from shutting down a critical international energy pipeline, according to an announcement issued by the Department of Justice’s Office of Public Affairs.
The Department of Justice stated that the court’s decision halts Michigan’s attempt to unilaterally close the pipeline, which transports energy resources across the United States–Canada border and plays a significant role in regional and international energy supply. Federal officials argued that Michigan lacked the authority to take actions that would interfere with international commerce and foreign relations.
According to the Justice Department, the pipeline is governed by federal law and international agreements, and any effort to disrupt its operation raises concerns related to national energy security, cross-border trade, and diplomatic obligations. The court agreed that Michigan’s actions would conflict with federal authority and international commitments.
The ruling affirms the federal government’s position that regulation of international pipelines falls under federal jurisdiction, not individual states. The Justice Department stated that allowing Michigan’s shutdown effort to proceed could have disrupted energy supplies, affected markets on both sides of the border, and set a precedent for state interference in matters reserved for the federal government.
The Department of Justice emphasized that the case involved broader constitutional principles, including the federal government’s exclusive role in foreign affairs and interstate and international commerce. The court’s decision reinforced those principles by maintaining uninterrupted operation of the pipeline while legal proceedings continue.
Federal officials stated that the ruling ensures continued energy flow and stability for industries, consumers, and international partners who rely on the pipeline’s operation. The Department of Justice noted that it will continue to defend federal authority in cases involving national infrastructure and international obligations.
The court’s decision marks a significant legal development in the ongoing dispute and preserves the status quo while further proceedings are considered.
