The wife of Donald Trump Jr., Bettina Anderson, confirmed Monday that Russian sports executive Umar Kremlev financed 2 nights of social gatherings following the couple’s private wedding ceremony. The public acknowledgement addressed recent news reports concerning the financial source of the private gatherings.
The confirmation follows secondary accounts published by ProPublica and The New York Times. Those accounts asserted that Kremlev (who serves as president of the International Boxing Association) paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover private island accommodations and entertainment expenses in the Bahamas.
In a direct statement published to her verified Instagram account, Bettina Anderson addressed the funding:
“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful. It is unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from. Friendship does not require a political motive. Generosity does not automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.”
A spokesperson for Donald Trump Jr. stated that Kremlev and Trump Jr. met through a mutual acquaintance in the hunting community. The 2 men reportedly share an interest in outdoor recreation and boxing; however, the spokesman added (as a point of clarification) that the men maintain no commercial or business relationship.
The press office of Umar Kremlev issued an institutional statement identifying him as a businessman and sports executive. The office stated that he has never engaged in discussions of political matters with his American acquaintances; furthermore, the organization stated (for official clarification) that the International Boxing Association did not incur expenses related to the gathering.
The New York Times, relying upon earlier reporting from ProPublica, described the weekend event with subjective language: a “lavish wedding after-party”. The secondary report asserted that payments totaled hundreds of thousands of dollars, including island rentals of approximately 100,000 dollars per night and a 70,000-dollar fireworks display.
