Combat engineers assigned to federal border operations constructed improvised mechanical rigging to secure wire obstacles atop 7-foot barriers after soft terrain disabled heavy machinery in western Texas, according to an operational dispatch issued by the Department of War.
The reinforcement mission, conducted within National Defense Area 2 near Fort Hancock, was carried out by soldiers of the 591st Combat Engineer Company-Infantry, an element of the 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade. The company operates under Joint Task Force Southern Border in support of Operation Ardent Vanguard, with operational sectors extending from Santa Teresa, New Mexico, to Fort Hancock, Texas.
The defensive line consists of 10 miles of 7-foot Hesco bastions, which were originally erected in May 2026 by the United States Navy and the United States Army Corps of Engineers under joint directives from the Department of War and United States Northern Command. That initial installation required the movement of more than 90,000 cubic yards of fill material across a 30-day construction schedule.
Current operations involve affixing 2 strands of concertina wire and 1 strand of razor wire along the crest of the barriers. To mitigate extreme summer heat, military units operated under split schedules: 1 platoon worked from late afternoon into the night, while a relief platoon worked from the pre-dawn hours into the late morning.
During installation along a final 300-meter segment, soldiers encountered mechanical and structural constraints. Standard steel pickets could not be driven into the packed bastions due to compressive stress limitations; simultaneously, unstable, soft ground conditions caused mechanical boom lifts to become immobilized in the desert soil.
To overcome the equipment failures, personnel devised a field hoisting assembly:
- Soldiers utilized non-standard climbing ropes and aluminum tent poles drawn from high-angle mountaineering kits to apply tension to the razor wire coils.
- Ground personnel employed interlocking camouflage-net support poles to elevate the coils manually, allowing soldiers positioned atop the 7-foot bastions to secure the wire using carabiners, stakes, and safety harnesses.
Army Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commander of Joint Task Force Southern Border, the 1st Armored Division, and Fort Bliss, issued an official statement regarding the engineering workaround:
“Barrier reinforcement operations represent more than physical infrastructure; they showcase the technical ingenuity and skill of our service members. For the last 14 weeks, our great soldiers have been out here day and night developing innovative solutions to stop human trafficking in our own territory.”
Platoon leadership confirmed that United States Customs and Border Protection agents monitoring the Fort Hancock sector reported that the completed obstacle placement contributed directly to limiting unauthorized crossings along that boundary corridor.
